The positive impact of cannabinoids on efficient sleep

Sleep is a vital and essential part of life, it has a significant impact on both the physical and mental health. Sadly, most people are disadvantaged and don’t have the luxury of getting a good night’s sleep.

The search for a solution to sleep disorders like insomnia has led to the introduction of cannabinoids like delta-tetra-hydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD)  for efficient sleep.

But how exactly do these cannabinoids work to give a more restful sleep?

How do cannabinoids affect sleep?

How do cannabinoids affect sleep?

Sleep is an essential physiologic function that alternates with wakefulness. The structural organization of normal sleep is broadly organized into two alternating phases: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM).REM sleep is regulated by neurons present in the pons and hypothalamus while NREM sleep is regulated by neurons in the preoptic areas.

These sleep-promoting regions are primarily regulated by inhibitory neurotransmitters like gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) or galanin. REM sleep is also promoted and maintained by cholinergic neurons located in the dorsolateral pons.

Effects of CBD on sleep.

CBD and THC act on the endocannabinoid system, the endocannabinoid system is primarily composed of endogenous lipid ligands and cannabinoid receptors. Endogenous ligands include 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG), eicosanoids, and anandamide

(N-arachidonoylethanolamide). These act on two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily central and present in the thalamus, hypothalamus, cortex, hippocampi, limbic system, and basal ganglia.

The CB1 receptors located in the pons and basal forebrain may be involved in sleep induction, these receptors activate cholinergic neurons located in the basal forebrain and pons and therefore aid in sleep induction. The CB1 receptors have been shown to enhance the activation of the serotonergic system yielding a potential regulatory role in the sleep-wake cycle. DEPRESSION and CANNABIS USE

Activation of CB1 produces juxtacrine intracellular signals mainly through presynaptic actions on neurotransmitter release, as the receptors are expressed almost exclusively on neuronal axon terminals. The interaction between these compounds and eCB actions at CB1 is also important in sleep alterations.

The serotonergic transmitter system located in the dorsal raphe nucleus of the brainstem is also involved in the modulation of the sleep-wake cycle. These serotonergic neurons receive afferent inputs from arousal systems including orexin/hypocretin, histamine, and noradrenaline systems.

How cannabinoids affect the brain to ensure efficient sleep.

When Cannabidiol (CBD) is introduced into the lateral hypothalamus (LH), a brain region that contains both awake-promoting orexin neurons and sleep-promoting melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons it activates neurons placed into nucleus accumbens (AcbC) leading to an enhancement in the dopamine (DA) contents as well as an increase in wakefulness. Further studies will be needed to address this putative neurobiological mechanism of action of CBD on the sleep-wake cycle.

CBD Coffee For Mood Enhancement

Monoamines (eg, serotonin [5-HT], norepinephrine [NE], histamine [HA]), and acetylcholine (ACh) modulate wakefulness and slow-wave and REM sleep. Inhibition of wake-promoting ACh and HA neurons by extracellular accumulation of adenosine, and the forebrain ventrolateral preoptic area, are critical for initiating sleep. The recently discovered neuropeptide hypocretin is important in maintaining wakefulness because it excites each of the above neurotransmitters containing cell groups.

How CBD and Caffeine Interact With the Human Body

The interactions between diurnal fluctuations in AEA and CB1R levels in this brain stem region may contribute to transitions in or maintenance of sleep-wake states. In the hypothalamus, AEA levels are highest during the light phase. In the nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, striatum, and hippocampus, structures associated with limbic and sensorimotor system functions such as learning and memory and action control, 2-AG and AEA show inverse diurnal rhythms, with the former higher during the light phase and the latter higher during the dark-phase. The diurnal fluctuation of eCB levels in limbic and sensorimotor structures may reflect their complex role in awake behavior.

How CBD sets up the circadian rhythm to aid in sleep.

When using cannabis for sleep the circadian rhythms are the internal diurnal rhythms that are coordinated by the brain. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus is known as the brain’s internal clock.

How CBD sets up the circadian rhythm to aid in sleep.

CBD entrains biological rhythms to facilitate daily sleep periods and thus may serve as a chronobiotic therapeutic compound for individuals with disrupted circadian function. It helps circadian entrainment in which the CB1 agonists alter the SCN’s ability to entrain to environmental light cues by limiting GABA release in presynaptic axon terminals of the SCN.

THC consumption disorients the perception of time thus inhibiting light-induced phase shifts in rhythm. A phase shift indicates that the rhythm is advanced or delayed which indicates that the bedtime and wake time occur earlier or later in the 24-hour cycle.

Conclusion.

As we have seen these cannabinoids THC and CBD, interact with the endocannabinoid system in the body, which is involved in regulating sleep. THC has been found to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep and increase deep sleep, while CBD has been shown to improve the overall quality of sleep.

Overall, cannabinoids show promise as a potential treatment for sleep disorders, but more studies are needed to fully understand their mechanisms of action and potential side effects.

So if you are struggling with a good night’s sleep, it may be wise to consider incorporating CBD into your routine. However, it is important to notify your doctor before CBD consumption because different people tend to react differently to the consumption of cannabinoids. It is important to note that the effects of cannabinoids on sleep may depend on several factors, such as the individual’s genetics, the dose and duration of use, and the type of sleep disorder intended to curb. Overall, CBD is a safe and natural way to promote good sleep and improve one’s health.

How CBD Coffee can Help Manage Inflammation & Improve Health

CBD coffee has been gaining much popularity in recent years as more and more people keep on discovering the numerous health benefits of combining CBD with their daily cups of joe.

One of the most significant benefits of this variety of coffee is its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which can help patients effectively manage inflammation and improve overall health and wellness.

Understanding inflammation

Inflammation is a complex physiological process that happens in response to injury, infection, or other irritants. The immune system triggers inflammation to protect the affected area and initiate the healing process.

When an injury or infection occurs, the immune system dispatches white blood cells to the affected area to remove any foreign substances or damaged tissues. These white blood cells produce cytokines, which are a type of protein that is linked to the inflammatory response. Cytokine production attracts more white blood cells to the area, and this ultimately results in swelling, redness, and pain.

In acute inflammation, the immune system responds to the stressor and the inflammatory response ends once the healing process is complete. However, in chronic inflammation, the immune system remains activated for extended periods. In turn, this leads to tissue damage and a higher likelihood of developing various chronic diseases.

Chronic inflammation has been associated with many health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and more. So managing chronic inflammation is critical for maintaining optimal health and well-being.

How does CBD work as an anti-inflammatory agent?

How CBD Coffee can Help Manage Inflammation & Improve Health

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound present in cannabis and hemp plants that have been shown to possess potent anti-inflammatory properties. Once consumed, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a vital role in regulating various physiological processes including inflammation.

In the particular case of how CBD coffee helps with inflammation, CBD works by suppressing cytokine production through a number of different mechanisms. First, it interacts with the ECS, which consists of three main components. These are the endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced naturally in the body), cannabinoid receptors (found on the surface of cells), and enzymes that break down endocannabinoids.

CBD interacts with the ECS by inhibiting the breakdown of endocannabinoids, which increases their levels in the body. This increase then activates cannabinoid receptors, leading to a reduction in cytokine production and subsequent inflammation.

Also, CBD interacts with other receptors that are involved in the immune system like the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV 1) receptor as another means of CBD coffee to reduce inflammation in the body. TRPV 1 is involved in the sensation of pain and inflammation. CBD has been shown to inhibit its activation, which leads to a reduction in cytokine production.

Additionally, CBD is thought to modulate the activity of a number of transcription factors and enzymes involved in cytokine production. For instance, it can inhibit the activity of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), a transcription factor that regulates the expression of genes involved in inflammation.

The power of CBD coffee

The power of CBD coffee

When combined with the caffeine in regular coffee, CBD coffee for inflammation delivers a powerful anti-inflammatory effect that can help to reduce pain and improve overall health and wellness. Inflammation CBD THC coffee may be consumed in several ways including as a regular cup of coffee with CBD oil added, or as pre-made CBD-infused coffee grounds or beans.

The amount of CBD in such coffee blends tends to vary depending on the product, but it typically ranges from 10mg to 25mg per serving. It is always important to start with a low dose and gradually increase it until you arrive at the right amount that works for you.

Lastly, while CBD coffee for reducing inflammation can be a great alternative to traditional pain medication, it is always recommended to consult your healthcare provider before using it, especially if you’re taking other medications.

The Ultimate Guide to CBD Coffee: What it is, How it is Made & the Health Benefits

Written By Brian Njenga

Coffee and cannabidiol (CBD) are some of the most popular substances on a global scale at the moment. Millions of people from all over the world consume them every day for many reasons, and both substances are known for providing a wide array of benefits.

Today, you can indulge in these two substances and receive the best of both worlds in a convenient, hassle-free manner. When you combine cannabidiol and coffee, the end result is CBD coffee — a beverage that’s become increasingly popular among coffee enthusiasts who are seeking out something new, while also accessing the numerous cannabidiol coffee benefits.

What is CBD coffee?

Cannabis buds

Cannabidiol coffee is a blend of coffee and CBD, a non-intoxicating compound present in the cannabis plant and hemp plant. There are currently two different methods used to make this sort of coffee

You can use CBD-infused coffee beans to brew cannabidiol coffee, or you may prefer combining CBD oil with your brew of plain coffee.

CBD oil is extracted from hemp, a strain of cannabis that possesses low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a psychoactive compound that triggers the “high” sensation experienced by consumers. The coffee used in cannabidiol blends can be any kind of coffee including cold brew, espresso, or even drip coffee.

The amount of cannabidiol used in CBD coffee tends to vary depending on the desired caffeine strength and the intended effects required.

It is important to note that cannabidiol isn’t a substitute for coffee. Rather, it is added to the blend to enhance the drinking experience, and of course, deliver the additional benefits associated with CBD.

Coffee has been around for hundreds of years, but the combination of cannabidiol and coffee is relatively new. Cannabidiol was first discovered in the early 1940s. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that researchers first discovered its potential health benefits.

By the turn of the 21st century, CBD had gained plentiful popularity. In recent years, cannabidiol has evolved into a key ingredient in many products including coffee.

Let’s take a closer look now at how you can make cannabidiol coffee in a stress-free way.

Using CBD-infused coffee beans

Ott Coffee CBD infused coffee beans

This method involves using cannabidiol-infused coffee beans — a result of infusing coffee beans with CBD during the roasting process. This process ensures that the cannabidiol is evenly distributed throughout the coffee beans. CBD coffee beans come in different varieties, so you can pick which one suits your needs — for instance: light, medium, and even dark roasts.

Adding CBD oil to your coffee

This is a straightforward process that involves adding drops of HEMP oil directly to your cup of coffee. However, it is important to state that CBD oil is hydrophobic. This simply means it doesn’t mix well with water-based liquids like coffee. In turn, this means using this method greatly impairs the drinking experience and you might end up with the bitter taste of the undissolved CBD oil. Instead, we strongly recommend you settle for Ott Coffee’s cannabidiol-infused beans. We can say we have definitely figured out the infusion process and can deliver the ultimate CBD coffee experience, without any compromises.

Interactions with the human body

Cannabidiol is believed to interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body. The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis or balance within the body. The ECS plays a critical role in a large number of physiological processes.

This includes pain, inflammation, sleep, appetite, and mood. CBD has been shown to interact with the ECS by binding itself to cannabinoid receptors in the body which aids in regulating these processes.

Perceived health benefits of CBD-infused coffee

Cannabis plant

Granted, not much research has been conducted on the purported health benefits of cannabidiol coffee. Also, that which has been done on CBD coffee effects is still in its early stages and ongoing. But there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests  CBD does indeed deliver a wide range of health benefits.

  • CBD coffee is touted for boosting energy levels and focus and drinking CBD coffee for energy seems a good idea. Coffee by itself is widely acclaimed for these properties, and the inclusion of cannabidiol is thought to enhance them.
  •  CBD is believed to help reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of calm, making CBD coffee for anxiety an ideal beverage for people who are stressed or anxious.
  • CBD has been shown to possess neuroprotective effects that are known to improve cognitive function and boost mental acuity.
  • CBD-infused coffee is believed to have exceptional anti-inflammatory properties. Coffee has been proven to possess these properties too and combining them is thought to deliver greater relief from inflammation-related conditions including arthritis.
  • cannabidiol coffee has been shown to improve digestive system health and function. It has even been linked with reducing the symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome.
  •  Coffee has been proven to possess cardioprotective effects, which is equally true for Hemp. So cannabidiol-infused coffee is thought to be able to minimize the risk factors of contracting heart disease.
  • CBD has been shown to have excellent analgesic properties that can help minimize the pain and discomfort associated with a number of health conditions.
  • Cannabidiol is thought to be in a position of improving sleep quality and minimizing insomnia.
  • Lastly, this variety of coffee may help regulate serotonin levels in the brain. This helps boost mood and makes the management of depression symptoms more effective.

There is much need for more research to fully understand all the potential health benefits of CBD coffee.

Is CBD coffee safe to drink?

While CBD coffee is generally considered safe to drink, it is important to understand that consumption can interact adversely with some medications. For instance, cannabidiol has been known to inhibit the metabolism of certain medications which can result in higher levels of such medicine in the bloodstream. So if you are on any medication, it is highly recommended to consult your doctor before consuming cannabidiol coffee.

DEPRESSION and CANNABIS USE

Written by Brian Njenga

Depression is a mental health condition that’s characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a general disinterest or displeasure in engaging in day-to-day activities.  However, depression is much more than just feeling down or having a particularly tough day. This condition can affect your thoughts, emotions, behavior, and overall health and well-being.

Depression is thought to be triggered by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. It may also affect people of all ages and from all walks of life. However, it’s important to note that depression is a treatable disease and there are a number of effective treatment plans available. This includes psychotherapy, medication, and even lifestyle changes.

The exact relationship between depression and cannabis use is quite intricate and the various research conducted on the topic have provided mixed findings. On one hand, some studies indicate a potential link between cannabis use and a heightened risk of contracting depression. On the other, some research suggests that cannabis might possess some therapeutic effects for people with depression.

Research on the link between depression and cannabis use

  • A 2019 study published in Jama Psychiatry reviewed the connection between using cannabis and the risk of developing depression among adolescents. This research followed a big sample of adolescents over a couple of years. Its finding was frequent cannabis use in adolescents is linked with a heightened risk of contracting depression in young adulthood.
  • Yet another 2019 study published in the Journal of Addiction reviewed the connection between cannabis use and depression in adults. This research analyzed data from multiple other studies and found evidence of a bidirectional link. This suggests that cannabis use can contribute to depression and there’s a higher likelihood of people with depression consuming cannabis.
  • A 2018 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders reviewed the self-reported effects of cannabis use on depression symptoms. This study surveyed people with depression who also used cannabis. Its finding was that the majority of them reported a decrease in depressive symptoms after cannabis use. Still, it is essential to mention that this research relied on self-reporting and didn’t utilize a controlled experimental design.

It is important to state that cannabis possesses a variety of chemical compounds including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG) along with many others. All these cannabinoids have been shown to have varying effects on mental health and wellness.

THC, for example, is the key psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant and it’s linked with the “high” effect. Alternatively, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that has been shown to possess numerous potential therapeutic properties including mental health and wellness.

Did these studies indicate how cannabis use brought about these effects on depression?

While the studies cited above indicate potential connections between cannabis consumption and depression, they weren’t able to establish a definitive causal relationship. Rather, they simply offered insights into the observed correlations and possible mechanisms that attempt to explain the effects.

  • The study published in Jama Psychiatry in regard to cannabis use and depression in adolescents indicated a connection between frequent cannabis consumption and a heightened risk of developing depression. Yet, it didn’t explore the exact mechanisms by which cannabis can cause depression. However, it’s feasible that frequent cannabis use during adolescence (a crucial brain development period) can disrupt brain circuits and neurotransmitter systems, which can potentially lead to the development of depressive symptoms.
  • The research published in the Journal of Addiction was centered on the bidirectional connection between cannabis consumption and depression in adults. Its findings suggest that people with depression can be more likely to utilize cannabis as a sort of self-medication. Also, this study indicated that cannabis use can lead to depression potentially, because of the direct effects of THC on brain function or via other indirect pathways. Still, the exact mechanisms behind these connections weren’t completely explained.
  • The third research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders depended on self-reported effects of cannabis use on depressive symptoms. Its findings indicate that people with depression can experience decreased symptoms after using hemp. Yet, this study didn’t utilize a controlled experimental design. While the self-reported effects can be subject to a number of biases.

It’s important to note that research on cannabis use,  particularly in the context of mental health is still ongoing. While the cited studies offer insights, more studies are necessary for us to be able to establish causality, understand the underlying mechanisms, and review various factors like dosage, frequency of use, individual differences, and the exact strains or compositions of the cannabis used.

What are the potential positive and negative effects of cannabis use in regard to depression?

When analyzing the potential positive and negative effects of cannabis in the context of depression, it’s always prudent to remember that individuals respond differently to cannabis use. Some people can find certain effects to be beneficial, while others can experience negative consequences.

Potential positive effects

  • Cannabis consumption, especially with strains with higher CBD content or balanced CBD : THC ratios can potentially deliver temporary mood elevation and feelings of relaxation or euphoria.
  • Cannabis use is thought to alleviate stress and anxiety symptoms for some people, which may be beneficial in the management of depressive symptoms.
  • There is evidence that certain strains of cannabis, especially those with higher THC levels can help improve sleep quality, which might be beneficial for people that experience sleep disturbances attributable to depression.

Potential negative effects

  • In some situations, cannabis consumption, particularly of strains high in THC can exacerbate depressive symptoms, heighten feelings of anxiety or induce feelings of paranoia.
  • Cannabis use has the potential of being habit-forming and can result in dependency or addiction in susceptible people. Substance use disorders, in this case, cannabis use disorder, may co-occur with depression and further complicate the management of both health problems.
  • Cannabis consumption, especially in higher doses or with higher THC content may impair cognitive function including memory, attention, and decision-making. In turn, this can negatively impact day-to-day functioning and exacerbate challenges related to depression.
  • Cannabis use can interact adversely with particular anti-depressant medicine, which can affect their efficacy or trigger negative effects.
  • Lastly, depending on the jurisdiction, cannabis use may have legal implications. Additionally, social stigmatization or negative societal attitudes toward cannabis consumption might affect personal and professional relationships.

It’s always important to approach cannabis use with caution, particularly if you’ve got a history of depression or mental health concerns. Should you be thinking of using cannabis to help you manage depressive symptoms, it’s wise to consult your healthcare provider who will be able to offer personalized guidance, help you evaluate potential risks, and consider alternative treatment options.

How To Make CBD Coffee Body Scrub From Home

Recycle your CBD Coffee and make it into a body scrub!

Written by John Marchese and Megan Lane

Have you ever looked at used coffee grounds and wondered if you can repurpose them? Well, you can. Some people use them in gardens to promote healthy plant growth. But the Ott Coffee team is here to help share several homemade CBD-infused coffee bodies and facial scrub recipes with you. This way, you can reuse used coffee grounds and walk around all year long with radiant skin.

Why should people use CBD coffee scrubs?

There isn’t specific evidence at the moment, but coffee contains caffeine and antioxidants that are applied to benefit our skin in many ways.

Caffeine in and of itself has many positive effects and so does CBD. But topically applying our fave mood-boosting cup of joe helps dilate blood vessels and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while

reducing excess water and tightening the skin. Who wouldn’t want to appear more toned from CBD — AKA, cannabidiol?

Another benefit comes from the natural exfoliating effects of the grounds of coffee themselves; they are loosening, cleaning, and removing dead skin cells when you take five to 10 extra minutes to scrub your face and body in the bath or shower two to three times every week.

And what about the CBD?

Well, by the time you have brewed and finished drinking your cup of CBD-infused coffee, the levels of residual CBD remaining in the grounds is low. But let’s not get too scientific here.

In case you’re wondering, ‘why should I use a CBD body scrub,’ we will touch on the primary benefits for you.

CBD is effective when it comes to fighting acne since it aids in reducing sebum from excess production. Too much sebum causes breakouts, blemishes, signs of early aging, greasy skin, and more.

The research is promising: the evidence implies CBD can be effective at addressing the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, too.

Exfoliating will make your skin look brighter and feel smoother. While our skin naturally exfoliates, our daily body lotion, sweat and oil can slow the natural process of shedding dead skin cells.

No need to buy those pricey skincare products you love anymore, though. Why would ya’ when you can DIY instead? This is better for the planet, your skin and your bank account.

Natural CBD body and facial scrubs are generally able to be made with ingredients you already have in your kitchen, making the process of whipping up a batch super simple.

CBD Coffee & Coconut Oil Body Scrub

Much like all our recipes, you should gently scrub your hands, body, and feet one to two times per week. Exfoliation with CBD coffee is designed for your hands, body, feet, and face. For best results, leave your homemade CBD coffee scrub on for three to five minutes before washing it off.

The oil you’ll use in the scrubs tends to be a tad slippery, so be careful you don’t fall in the shower. All of these scrubs expire in six months, but for those who apply them on their entire body once a week… you’ll need to make more because they’ll run out.

For each recipe, you can use any essential oil, body-safe scents, or blend of oils to create your desired fragrance.
